What is the difference between different coatings for paper cups?

Before the paper cup raw materials are made into paper cups, a layer of coating will be applied on the base paper, so that the paper cups can hold liquids and other beverages.

Paper cup coatings can be made from different kinds of plastics, and paper cups can even be produced without a plastic coating. So what is the difference between the different coating types? Today I will introduce it to you.

PE coated paper cup

In order to make the paper cups watertight, the inside of the paper cups will be covered with a thin film. Plastic-coated paper cups are coated with PE coating. PE coating is a food-grade coating that can be in contact with food. It is colorless, odorless, non-toxic food-grade, made of naphtha, and cannot be naturally degraded.

PLA paper cup – bioplastic

PLA paper cups, like other paper cups, have a thin layer of plastic coating inside, but compared with other non-degradable plastic coated paper cups, PLA made of plant materials such as sugar, cornstarch, sugar cane or sugar beets, It is a biodegradable bioplastic.

PLA has a low melt point, so is best for cold drinks that is no hotter than around 40 degrees celsius. Where more heat resistance is needed, such as in cutlery, or lids for coffee. This involves adding chalk to the PLA to act as a catalyst, and then rapidly heating and cooling the PLA resin during production.

PLA products take 3-6 months to compost in an industrial composting system facility. The production of PLA uses 68% less fossil fuel resources than conventional plastics and is the world’s first greenhouse gas neutral polymer.
